Lindsay Out Loud.JPG

General Overview:  Lindsay Out Loud, the YouTube channel of video creator Lindsay Pardo, provide great story telling using books that are highly engaging.  Many are newer stories which may not be available in classrooms.  Most have a social emotional learning component and Lindsay (not me) asks questions of the listeners to challenge their thinking.  This is a great site to find new stories as well as be inspired in your questioning skills.  This channel also offers wonderful examples for adults wishing to increase their storytelling skills.  Lindsay clearly illustrates how to use different voices, variable speed, and the insertion of comments or questions to keep young children engaged in the story.

Authentic Learning Experience:  Because young children love to be engaged and involved when listening to stories, Lindsay Out Loud provides a perfect opportunity for them to experience a wide range of literature in an authentic story time setting.  While directing questions to her audience and then using strategic pauses, young children get the experience of interacting with Lindsay during these asynchronous story times.  Families of young children can use these videos to encourage a love of literature and respect for illustrations, while also experiencing new books together.  In addition, the questions Lindsay poses at the end of each video give young children the chance to reflect on the story, as well as discuss their ideas and views with their trusted adults.

Developmentally Appropriate Practices (child development, interest based, culturally appropriate): Lindsay Out Loud is a highly engaging story time experience for young children.  While viewing these stories, children will practice listening.  With the questions posed at the end of each video, young children can practice communication skills with their families and caregivers.  The modeling displayed here can also help children to learn the appropriate way to ask questions which could be imitated during their personal interactions.  These videos are available on a wide variety of social media platforms for free; is equally accessible on desktop or mobile applications; and has Closed Captioning.  Auto translation is available on YouTube.

Washington Early Learning Guidelines:  Lindsay Out Loud is appropriate for preschool children as they learn to request favorite books; enjoy being read to; and use their own experiences to comment on stories. These developmental guidelines are:

  • Request a favorite book

  • Enjoy picture books and being read to.  Enjoy looking at books on own.  Use pictures to predict a story.

  • Use own experiences to comment on a story, though the comments might not follow the story line.
